Although the importance of prosthetic groups to the activity of certain enzymes has been much studied, the part played by the protein portion of the molecule has received little attention. Haemoglobin, catalase and peroxidase all have the same prosthetic group, namely, protohaematin, yet the attachment of different proteins gives them distinct and characteristic properties. Thus haemoglobin is a respiratory carrier, capable ofcombining reversibly with oxygen without undergoing oxidation; catalase, an enzyme catalysing the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and peroxidase, an enzyme utilizing hydrogen peroxide for the oxidation ofanumber ofsubstances.
